Having heard about the Twilight series and all the hype that accompanied the book and the movie, I thought I would check out a different Stephenie Meyer book. I finally gave up on the written word and made a stab at the audiobook. The subject sounded interesting, but I could never get past the first 50 pages. The writing is languid and over done. I think I lasted the equivalent of 50 pages on the audiobook too. I ended up not caring about anyone in the book.
I love the way Stephenie Meyer writes. Once I start one of her books I can't stop until I'm done.
Though her Twilight series has received much more attention, I liked The Host much better. It is well written and has a truly fascinating and novel story line.
I'm not a fan of science fiction, but I enjoyed this book a lot. While mystery, suspense, and action didn't fill the pages as in the Twilight series, it was still difficult for me to put the book down once I got into it. Towards the beginning I found myself a little frustrated with part of the plot, but then realized its purpose. However, I did feel like the author got a little carried away with some of the "science fiction parts;" but then again, isn't that what this genre is all about.
This is an excellent book. In fact it was the first science fiction book I have ever read. I loved the plot and the entire story line. Stephenie Meyer is an excellent story teller who has a wonderful imagination.
